UNHCR: 8 thousand illegal immigrants inside shelters in Libya

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said that the number of illegal immigrants in shelters in Libya is about 8 thousand immigrants distributed in 18 centers supervised by the Government of National Accord (GNA) Interior Ministry.

The UNHCR said on Friday it was concerned about what it described as the “deterioration of the situation of migrants” in the shelters in Libya, claiming in a previous statement, the deterioration of the situation in the centers because of what it called “an increase in overcrowding and lack of basic standards of living,” according to UNHCR.

The UN agency said the shelters had seen what they described as “riots and hunger strikes for refugees demanding a solution to their living conditions.”

The head of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Filippo Grandi announced in early June that the Libyan Coast Guard saved 80% of refugees and migrants at sea.
