Italy will provide patrol boats to help Libya rescue migrants

Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Danilo Tunnelelli said on Tuesday that his country will provide Libya with patrol boats to assist the Libyan Coast Guard in the search and rescue of migrants at sea.

Tunnelelli said the Italian government will grant new means of transportation to strengthen the ability of the Libyan authorities to stop the launch of boats from the coast of the country, according to Italian news agency AKI.

The Italian minister said, there is an Italian-Libyan project with aims to strengthen the management of search and rescue operations at sea, adding that Italy is waiting for the response of the Libyan side on what they need to carry out their tasks.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini visited Libya on Monday and met with the head of the Presidential Council (PC) to discuss the immigration issue, which he stressed was a common issue between the two countries.
