German Chancellor Says African Union Should be More Supportive Towards Libya

(Author: Libyan Gazette Editorial Staff)

Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, called on the African Union to help Libya get out of the state of chaos and instability that it is in.

Merkel was on a three-day visit to Africa where she spent some time in Mali, Niger and Ethiopia.

While in Ethiopia Merkel said, “I am expressly in favour of the African Union bringing its influence to bear to help solve the conflict.” The German Chancellor made her statement to the African Union, emphasizing that Libya is a “sad example” of a country suffering from collapsed state structures.

Democratic and economic reforms are key to reestablishing a state of security and stability in Libya, said the German stateswomen.

Merkel added that African states need to step-up their support for Libya, especially in the migration crisis and combating rogue militia groups.

African nations need to resolve the migration crisis so that its citizens no longer need to leave to Europe to seek a better life, said Merkel.

According to Merkel, Africa could suffer from “brain drain” as many of its young skilled workers leave their homelands in search of a better life in European countries.

“It is important that Africa does not lose its best minds,” she said.

During Germany’s G20 presidency in 2017 Merkel promised that Africa will be a priority and urged the African Union to support Libya in regards to combating terrorism and mass migration in the meantime.
