European Union: The political solution is to “alleviate the suffering” of the citizens of Libya

On Friday, the European Union mission to Libya announced that it had offered training to support Libyan municipal officials in the EU-funded Nicosia initiative to link the European regions and Libyan municipalities.

The training, according to the mission’s Facebook page, was held in Tunis and was supervised by the International Center for Local Development Studies, based in France. It included a crisis management workshop attended by representatives of municipalities and universities in Tobruk, Benghazi, Sirte, Tripoli, Gharyan, Zintan, Sabha, Bani Walid, and Zawiyah.

The head of the EU mission to Libya, Bettina Muscheidt stressed that the Union strongly supports a political solution in Libya in order to alleviate the suffering of citizens; calling for strengthening the capacity of municipalities to overcome the difficulties and to be able to provide services.

Knowledge should be shared on best practices in an innovative approach that brings together European expertise and talent within communities and gives a vital role to Libyan universities as factors for professional and social development.

For his part, the Director of the Office for International Cooperation at the University of Sabha, Mayouf Ali, stated that the project is “valuable and fruitful” and can allow for Libyan universities and municipalities to work together. He pointed out that the experience can be transferred by having universities and municipalities train its employees on crisis management.
