European Union: Migrant situation in Libya is “out of control”

On Thursday, the European Union’s Commissioner for Immigration and Refugee Affairs Dimitris Avramopoulos expressed the EU’s readiness to provide support and assistance in the migration file, describing it as a “global problem”.

According to Aki News Agency, Avramopoulos stated that the migrant situation in Libya is ‘out of control and difficult to manage’. He added that the EU is ready to provide material assistance to Libya and to provide it with experts on the issue so long as the international community undertakes initiatives to restore stability in the country.

Avramopoulos said that the EU discussed the issue of migration in Libya with  neighboring countries in the north in order to take over border control; stressing the need to coordinate with the Libyan government because the issue goes beyond its borders and has become a “global problem”.

On a relevant note, the Minister of Interior for the Government of National Accord, Al-Aref Al-Khoja, released a statement in the presence of representatives of accredited embassies in Libya stating that investigations are ongoing into allegations regarding the violations of the rights of illegal immigrants in Libya; stressing that the “perpetrators” will be brought to justice if the allegations are proven to be true.
