Conte: We Want to Break the Current Political Deadlock in Libya at the Palermo Conference

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that at the Palermo conference on Libya scheduled for next week, they want to break the current deadlock in the political process by starting the elections as soon as possible if the necessary legislative and security political conditions are met.

In a statement on the sidelines of a session of the Italian House of Representatives broadcasted by the Italian agency “Ansa”, on Wednesday, Conte stated that the conference “Palermo” is, “An essential step to achieving stability in Libya and the security of the Mediterranean as a whole.”

Conte explained that the conference will not solve all the problems in Libya, but its aim is to “Create a sustainable opportunity to meet the political parties on the Libyan arena, stressing that, “The main players on the Libyan political scene will be present at the conference.” He also expressed his satisfaction with a large number of international figures confirming their presence at the Conference.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as well as high-level delegations from France, Russia and the United States, confirmed their attendance at the Palermo conference.
