Çavuşoğlu: Our legitimate support should not be confused with foreign terrorist mercenaries.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavuşoğlu said Thursday that his country is providing military and advisory support to Libya based on the agreement signed between the two countries, stressing the need not to confuse the Turkish legal presence in Libya with foreign terrorist fighters, in reference to the Russian Wagner mercenaries and Janjaweed who Haftar recruited to fight with him.

Çavuşoğlu added during a press conference accompanied by his German counterpart, Heiko Maas, that there are many mercenaries in Libya, and that there is agreement to withdraw them from it, indicating at the same time that it is not in Libya’s interest to end the support provided under the agreement, from military and advisory training.

Çavuşoğlu explained that entering into bilateral agreements between two countries by third parties would not be a correct approach.

It is worth noting that, on November 27, 2019, Libya and Turkey signed two military and naval memoranda of understanding.
