Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj of the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) has promised to bring an end to the political chaos in Tripoli that was instigated by the General of National Congress (GNC)’s attempted coup in the capital last week.

Sarraj also called on the GNA to resume its work in the capital.

In an interview with a local news channel, Sarraj stressed that the Presidential Council “dealt with events in a wise manner and did not use forceful matters to dissolve the situations in a time when many have resorted to violence.”

Sarraj’s statements came after Khalifa Ghwell, leader of the GNC, proclaimed that his government has taken over command of the capital about ten days ago. The GNC has been absent from the political arena in Tripoli since March of last year.

The situation in southern Libya is “very dangerous from a security and a humanitarian perspective” Sarraj added. Sarraj was referring to rogue groups who have been taking advantage of Libya’s weaknesses by freely moving in and out of the country’s southern region to engage in illegal activity.

In his statement, the Libyan Prime Minister said those who are engaged in smuggling oil out of Libya are crippling Libya’s economy and emphasized that “measures will be taken to address the smuggling in Libya.
