The US military command in Africa, Africom, said that over several days this May, Russian MiG-29 and Sukhoi 24 fighters, stationed in Syria, left for Libya, transporting Russian military personnel.
AFRICOM added, in a statement issued by it, that the Russian MiG-29s were repainted after they landed at the Hmeimim Air Base in Syria, so that they did not carry any national marks, after they were carrying the marks of the Russian Air Force.
AFRICOM explained that Russian planes landed in eastern Libya near the city of Tobruk to obtain fuel, and that at least 14 unmarked Russian aircraft newly painted and were delivered to Al-Jufra airbase in Libya.
The commander of the US forces in Africa, “AFRICOM” “Stephen Townsend,” said on Tuesday that Russia is trying to tip the scales in its favor in Libya by using the government-backed “Wagner” group despite Russia’s attempt to deny this.
