On Tuesday, the Italian coastguard said that close to 3,000 migrants and refugees were saved in 30 different rescue missions in the Strait of Sicily on Tuesday.

In the last two days, close to 10,000 lives were saved by rescue missions on the Mediterranean Sea.

Calmer weather conditions this week are said to be the cause of the spike in refugees crossing the Mediterranean Sea from Libya to Italy. Many of the refugees cross the Sea on small overcrowded boats which are usually in poor condition.

Information on the nationalities of the refugees from Tuesday’s rescue mission has not been made available.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) released a report on Friday saying that in 2016 105,000 refugees arrived in Italy. About 2,726 have died on the way to Italy in the same period.

Close to 1,100 refugees were rescued on Sunday and 6,500 were saved in 40 separate rescue missions on Monday by the Italian coastguard.
